SJV Gives Back

Today in America, there are a reported 45.3 million people who are homeless, and 49.1 million people are hungry. There are many organizations around America that are dedicated to helping those who need it. But did you know that you can help them here at SJV? Through the Coat Drive and the Culinary Club helping the Poorest of the Poor foundation; there are many ways to give back to the community here at SJV.

The Coat drive, going on now until November 7, is a collection for needy families in Monmouth County. The coats will be delivered to families in need of warm clothing for the winter. Mr. Johnson, director of the collection, has a goal for the students of SJV to bring in one coat each which would mean that 1000 coats would be given to those in need. Boxes to drop off the coats are located outside the Main Office and the Chapel.

Another way to help others through SJV is through the Culinary Club, and you don’t need to be a member to help! Every Monday, the Culinary Club collects lunches for the Barn for the Poorest of the Poor in Middletown, New Jersey. These lunches, filled with a sandwich, snacks, and drinks, are brought to room 113 every Monday morning and then delivered to Mother Teresa Regional School in Atlantic Highlands. They are then picked up by a representative from the organization and delivered to the homeless on the streets of New York City. President of the Culinary Club, Annalisa Leite, brought this to the club last year, and they have already collected over 100 lunches. Gerry Duffy, Trustee of the Barn for the Poorest of the Poor, is very thankful for the support from the Culinary Club and the SJV community; “We thank you for this gift as we humbly continue to depend on our Lord’s Divine Providence to provide our needs.” Duffy writes to Leite and club members. “Thank you for your thoughtful and generous work.” Anyone is welcome to drop off a lunch to room 113 every Monday until the end of the year.
