Rap Taking Over Music World

Within today’s society it seems as if there is only one genre that catches young teen’s attention. After asking ten different teenagers more than half classified their music tastes as only rap. Artists like Lil Wayne, Drake, Eminem, Pitbul and Big Sean are becoming idols to these young adults.

So what actually makes rap the most popular genre within teens? Senior Samantha Fessler describes rap as “lyrics that tell a story when you listen to the song. There aren’t just two verses and a chorus that repeats, they have meaning and you can tell by the way the artist raps whether their mood is positive or negative.”

“It takes more talent to make your emotions rhyme than it takes to write a love song over a boy who broke your heart,” said Fessler.

Between the ten different teenagers all of them said the same thing when it came to describing rap music. It can either lift you up when you are in a “funk” or bring you down. “If I had to pick one artist whose lyrics bring you down the most it would be Drake. His lyrics have meaning and can relate to everyone’s life,” said Fessler. “I hate when people say rap isn’t music. It’s more poetic than any other genre out there. All Taylor Swift does is sing about boys who leave her, rap can be about anything.”

While many of the teenagers agree that the rap genre is actually considered “music,” parents tend to disagree. Tina Iovine, mother of three children is fully against the whole genre in general. The lyrics give off a “bad vibe” and do not show children the right path to take in life. “It gives a bad message off to our kids. Rap is about drugs and girls, there really is no positive message. And the amount of cursing that goes on in the songs is ridiculous.”

Many people have their differences when it comes to the type of music they like. As of now it seems like rap is becoming the most popular genre within the teen population.
