In March of 2010, Paul Sciarra, Evan Sharp, and Ben Silberman created a website that almost every person could find a use for. In the last three years, Pinterest has become the third most popular social networking site behind Face book and Twitter, with more than 40 million users, 83 percent of them women, according to Engauge, a digital marketing agency.
While the site is predominately used by women, the creators explained that there were many uses for men as well. From efficiently storing tools, to house projects, fixing cars, and car accessories, there is a manly side to Pinterest.
Pinterest is especially popular for wedding planning. “Pinterest and brides go together like love and marriage,” said Olivia Barker from USA Today. “But it’s not just the women in white who are touchscreen-tapping into the power of the 3-year-old site.”
“It’s changing the industry” for vendors, planners and magazines, says Anne Fulenwider, Editor-in-Chief of Brides Magazine.
Most of the wedding ideas on the site are ‘do-it yourself’ inspired. Centerpieces, plate settings, utensils, and simple décor have their own pages. It emphasizes that there are ways to get chic items for bargain prices. Why not have your dream wedding fulfilled to all of your childhood expectations right there for you?
You can follow certain pages within the categories of what you like and what your taste is. “I go on Pinterest for everything. For healthy snacks, for cute nail designs and nail inspirations, and for cute hairstyles as well. There are many pages that give you tutorials on what you are interested in and it’s always right at your fingertips, and that’s just something that not many websites have.” said a current Pinterest user.
When she says “right at your fingertips,” she’s not kidding. In response to an overwhelming request, in August of 2012, the Pinterest iPhone app was created.
Pinterest is user friendly and accessible no matter where you are. “Pin” on the beach, “pin” in the car, “pin” in the mountains, or anywhere else you can imagine!
