Julia Aleo, Writer

What do you do besides teach?

I run Photography club, and a little club called display club and we take care of the glass case by the front office.

What do you do outside of school?

Last night I went home and I slept *Laughs* I fell asleep in the chair, and I got up and went to bed! Actually, I paint glasses, that’s my hobbie. My mom didn’t have a big feeling for art, she felt that art was just fluff, and you need to be able to use it for something. So I paint glasses and  I sell them on Etsy, that’s my release.

Where did you go to school?

I graduated from Monmouth College, which is now Monmouth University. Interesting fun fact: I graduated the same time as Mrs. Lau, she and I went through the art program together and never knew each other till she came here! I went to Red Bank Catholic, she went to Mater Dei.

How long have you been teaching at SJV?

This is my tenth year.

Did you teach anywhere else before here?

Yeah, I taught in Holmdel. I had taught in Holmdel, had my daughters, and my daughter came home from here and said the art teacher was pregnant, Mrs. Sharp. And I said ‘Ooo, I’m ready to go back!’ So I came back!

What’s the most memorable moment you’ve had at SJV?

Oh! Let me think on that. Umm, I’ve had a lot. I’m gonna go with the most recent, which was being honored by one of the inductees at the National Honors Society ceremony. As of now that’s like my favorite. I felt very special that night.

If you had to move to a country tomorrow, where would you go and what would you do?

I’m gonna say Ireland because from everything I’ve seen it looks very pretty and peaceful and there’s farmland and grass and it just looks like a simple life. And I would paint!

Would you do watercolor or anything specific?

I would love to do watercolor because I’m no good at it. I have at home boxes of watercolor paper and all different colors of watercolor paint because that’s what I want to do but I never sit down to do it. I look at Pinterest or Esty and then I just don’t do it. So that’s my dream!

Of all the art medias that you could do, what is your favorite?

*No hesitation* Paper mache. I love to make things out of paper mache!
