Just as Taylor Swift’s new album, 1989, is about to be released in the upcoming week, Swift has also

dropped a new single. On October 14, fans were eager to listen to her new song off the record called

“Out of the Woods,” adding more to the pop atmosphere of her new style.

This past summer, Swift announced, after two years of silence on the charts, some exciting news. In

a Yahoo webcast on August 18, Swift broke the silence declaring the album’s name, 1989, the album

cover, and her new single “Shake It Off.” 1989 is named after Swift’s year of birth, and is her first official

pop album. “Shake It Off” gained an audience of nine million during the radio premiere, and this month

the song crossed the two million sales mark. The music video for the song also was very popular, gaining

over 176 million views.

1989’s expected release is coming closer and closer. October 27 is an exciting date for Swift fans

everywhere, and Swift has helped this excitement become a little more tolerable. On October 14, Swift

released a new single called “Out of the Woods.” The song hints at a previous relationship, most likely

ex-Harry Styles, and an accident that left him in the hospital. Along with the single, Swift agreed to share

a lyric from each track on her album each day leading up to her new album.

The reviews for these past two singles show good signs for the album. Billboard’s comments for Shake

It Off show that they are on her side with her switching to pop: “….with ‘Shake It Off,’ Swift proves why

she belongs among pop’s queen bees: As you may have guessed, the song sounds like a surefire hit; it

also previews an album executive-produced by Swift and Martin. Swift will probably catch some flak for

moving away from her bedrock sound, but she has never colored inside the lines. And, as ‘Shake It Off’

shows, Swift can handle the criticism.”

As for the new song, “Out of the Woods,” New York Daily Times describes the song as “a far more

contemplative piece than the first single from her full ‘1989’ album.”

As the album approaches, many reviews point to a surprising, yet good, album that is much different

than Swift’s pop-country vibe. “I’ve been a fan of her from the start, especially when she was country.

I know this album is going to be different, but Red (Swift’s last album) was also quite different and I

fell in love with it. I have no doubt that this album will bring me the same experience,” said Keighley

Newsholme, a student at Saint John Vianney, who is a die-hard fan.

Swift’s album is highly anticipated considering she is known as queen of pop, and all ears will be on

1989.
