On June 8, 2014, the town of Union Beach, New Jersey suffered a tragic loss. Robert Meyer, 54, died tragically while fighting a four alarm fire for the Union Hose Fire Company Number One. Many months later, Monmouth County still honors the heroic death of Volunteer Firefighter Meyer, and will hold a memorial service Sunday, October 5, 2014.

The four alarm fire struck in a Commercial Building on Union Avenue, calling all firefighters in on an emergency. Meyer fell ill fighting the flames, and was rushed to the nearest hospital, and later died due to cardiac arrest. The town of Union Beach honored Meyer by hanging ribbons around the town and hanging his jacket and helmet in the window of his fire house. Monmouth County Fire Assistant Prosecutor Marc C. Lemieux makes remarks about the kind of person Meyer was. “The Bay shore community and Monmouth County residents are mourning the loss of a man who volunteered his time to help those in need. His death is a selfless act that illustrates his dedication to his community.”

Monmouth County and the Residents of Union Beach still keep Meyer close in their hearts. This Sunday, October 5, 2014, there will be a Memorial Service at the Monmouth County Fire Academy at 10 a.m. to honor Meyer for the sacrifice he made while fighting a fire to save the people of his community. County officials and Firefighters from around Monmouth County will join together to honor Meyer. Fire Marshal Henry Stryker III and Freeholder John P. Curley will speak at this event.
