One of the most over glorified experiences in anyone’s life is prom. It is just another school dance, except this time everyone is expected to be asked to go and wear beautiful dresses and fine tuxedos. But now you cannot just ask someone to go to prom. Over the past couple years, the new term “promposal” has become a new trend among teenagers.

Promposals have taken high schools by storm with their creativity and extravaganza. Boys and girls alike have taken on the challenge of asking a friend, classmate, or significant other to one of the biggest high school events in history. Students want to make the whole experience memorable, and it all starts with the promposal.

High school students all over are coming up with fresh and creative ways to ask a special someone to prom. Some have written songs, put together flash mobs, or even done little pranks just to make this small moment memorable. If you want to be the winner of your school’s promposal competition, here are just a few ideas to get you started.

  1.       Sticky Car

Most juniors and seniors will drive themselves around town. If your possible prom date has a car, then this is the promposal for you! You will need to buy multiple different colored Post-It notes. You can either spell out “Prom?” using Post-It Notes or write “Prom?” on all of the Post-It Notes. You don’t have to cover their entire car, but as long as you cover the majority of it and offer to help clean it up afterwards, you have a set plan. If you want to accompany this event with flowers and candy, that is always a good idea.

  1.       Sports Enthusiast

If your possible date plays any sport, you have a few options for asking.

  • Your first possibility is if the ball he/she plays with is a basketball or volleyball, you can just write “Prom with me?” on the ball itself with a marker. If the ball is smaller like a tennis ball or a baseball, you could use multiple balls to spell out “Prom?” on their home field or court.
  • Maybe he/she doesn’t use a ball in their sport, such as competitive swimming or running. If this is the case, you can use any equipment they use. Using swimming as an example, you can write in pool noodles your prom message and have it floating in the water as he/she walks into practice, or write on a swim cap “Prom?” with flowers and chocolate.
  • Your next option is to make a sign and hold it up at one of his/her games. You have to make sure the sign is readable from far away and that it stand out in a crowd.  Also, make sure your possible sporty date can see your face when you hold up the sign, so maybe sit towards the front of a large crowd.
  • Your last sporty option is during halftime or in-between innings, races, or whatever break your possible prom date’s sport has, talk to the person in charge, their teammates, or their coach and ask if you could ask them during that break. All you need is a microphone and some flowers. Make sure to introduce yourself to the crowd and then turn to your prospective prom date and just ask them to go to prom. This option is a bit more public so try to make sure it’s not too embarrassing and that they can still keep their head in the game when play resumes.
  1.       Food Junkie

This approach applies to all those food lovers out there. Everyone loves some good pizza and fast food every once in awhile. Asking anyone with their favorite food is almost always an automatic “Yes!” All you have to do is come up with a witty phrase or sentence to go along with the meal. To use pizza as an example, you can write on the inside of the pizza box something along the lines of, “I know this is cheesy, but will you go to prom with me?” It’s sweet, simple, and then you can eat it together once you’re date has said yes.

  1.       Scavenger Hunt

This option is only going to work if you and the person you are asking your longtime boyfriend/girlfriend. What you are going to need are five roses and five special places between the two of you, such as your first date, your first kiss, or just anywhere where there was a special moment. Write the each letter of “Prom?” on separate pieces of paper and attach one paper to one rose. On the back of each paper, write a clue to find the next rose. To make sure that strangers do not take any of the roses or that your boyfriend/girlfriend cannot get the rose, you might want to have a friend stationed at each place to avoid these problems. On the piece of paper with the question mark on it, tell him/her to come to his/her house, where you are waiting with candy and more flowers to hear his/her answer.

  1.       Locker Surprise

If your school is the type of school where every student has a locker, this promposal may be up your alley. You would need to blow up a lot of balloons to fill up your possible date’s locker and have to have access to their locker combination. This is best done after they have left school for the day so the balloons will cascade out in the morning when they open their locker. You should also stand by, ready to ask “the big question.”

  1.     Movie Madness

A film or a T.V. show can hold a lot of memories. Whether it be a Disney classic, an old black and white film, or the newest blockbuster, use your possible date’s favorite. You should use either a pun or a popular quote from the movie to catch your prospective date’s attention. If you wanted to go all out, you could dress up as a main character while you ask him/her.

  1.       Let’s Keep It Traditional

There is so much hype around prom that some people can get lost in it all and forget the whole reason for asking someone to go to prom in the first place. If your prospective date doesn’t want a big and flashy promposal, flowers and a stuffed animal will almost always do the trick. Some people do not want to draw attention to themselves, but still want to be asked to prom in a sweet way. Keep it simple with a “Will you please go to prom with me?” with flowers and candies at your side for a more intimate promposal.

There are countless ways, more than ever could be listed here, to ask someone to go to prom. The takeaway from this article is to make your hoped-to-be date wants to go with you, cater to their interests and hobbies, and when all else fails, chocolate and flowers are always there for you.
