A Sport, or Just Another Game?

A+Sport%2C+or+Just+Another+Game%3F

To some, softball  may be just another sport; a girl version of baseball some may think. However, softball is just as competitive as any other sport.

There is a genuine history behind the sport of softball, one that few would  expect. It all came about in November of 1887 in Chicago, Illinois at the Farragut Boat Club. A group of alumni were waiting for the outcome of the Yale versus Harvard football game, when suddenly Yale was announced the winner. As soon as they were pronounced the winner, one of the Yale alumni threw a boxing glove at a Harvard rival. This Harvard supporter swung at the boxing glove with a stick. Out of nowhere, George Hancock, a reporter for the Chicago Board of Trade, screamed out, “Play ball!” His outburst caused the first game of softball to begin. That was only just the beginning of a long journey ahead for the evolution of the game that we call softball.

The name “softball” was not the authentic term that was originally used. Softball, primarily, was referred to as indoor baseball, kitten baseball, mush ball, pumpkin ball, and diamond ball. The game of softball has come a long way and is now one of the most popular sports played throughout the entire country. It can be played indoors or outdoors and all year round. In fact, here at Saint John Vianney softball is a popular sport, having won multiple championship titles over the years.
The Varsity coach is Mrs. Kim Lombardi and the JV softball coach is Ms. Lauren Galladay.  “JV softball is coming off an undefeated season last year. With some returns and great new players, this season is looking up,” said Galladay.  With a positive attitude, each team is expected to reach success this season, and every season.
Softball is not just any game; it is a game of intensity, drive, and knowledge. Softball is a real sport, a sport of true heart.
