Floyd Mayweather brought his A-game on September 14th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas when he took on Saul “Canelo” Alvarez for the Junior Middleweight Championship of the world in the fight made famous as “The One.”

Mayweather improved to 45-0 on his amazing career with the win on Saturday night. The fight was a lob-sided affair with Mayweather getting the majority decision in which two judges scored 117-111 and 116-112 in favor of Mayweather. He came in as a slight favorite at -240, but Alvarez was not far behind coming in at +260.

This fight included the biggest live gate in history starting at $20 million. Estimated pay-per-view income reached around the $150 million mark. Mayweather alone set a record for the biggest purse by a fighter in history; $41.5 million was guaranteed for the richest man in sports, Floyd “Money” Mayweather. Along with the $41.5 million guaranteed Mayweather’s pay-day includes revenue from the pay-per-view income along with a bonus for winning the fight.

Mayweather made a grand entrance into the area accompanied by rapper Lil Wayne singing his hit “A Milli” and Justin Beiber. The two men were introduced, the national anthems of both Mexico and America were sung; and “The One” had begun.

Rounds one and two were a bit slow as they are in any fight. Each of the two fighters were just getting a feel for each other in the ring as they would always do. Mayweather would go on to take the first round 10-9 judged by,Craig Metcalfe, Dave Moretti and CJ Ross . Come late second round things were starting to pick up with both men landing multiple body shots along with shots to the upper body. Mayweather would go on to win that round as well 10-9 (Moretti and Ross).

The third round was just plain ole boxing, both men taking shots, blocking shots each landing multiple punches. Alvarez would go on to take this round 10-9 (Moretti & Ross).

The fourth round began with a low blow from Alvarez. Mayweather came to Alvarez for a glove tap out of respect and Alvarez left him hanging. This was a key point in the match in which Mayweather began to land more and more punches, mainly his left jab. He would go on to win rounds four and five in which all judges had it 10-9, 10-9.

The fight reached the half-way point, round six with Mayweather leading 59-55(Metcalfe & Moretti) and 58-56 (Ross). Alvarez was becoming frustrated; so frustrated that he shouldered Mayweather. It was Canelo’s second warning. Again out of respect, Floyd went for a glove tap and was again denied. Then things really started heating up and combo after combo was being unleashed on Alvarez by Mayweather.

Mayweather would go on to take round six, seven and eight 10-9 and it began to look as if one punch could end this fight.

In the ninth and tenth rounds, Alvarez showed his weakness-stamina. Mayweather exploited this weakness as any great fighter does and took advantage with combinations and jabs repeatedly to the head of Alvarez. Two of the judges saw it differently giving Canelo the 10-9 win in the ninth. Canelo then found himself in no-mans-land, on the ropes stuck blocking punches. However Mayweather would back off to save his energy for the final two rounds. Mayweather then went on to take the tenth in a clean sweep 10-9.

Then came the final two rounds 11 and 12. It became do or die for Alvarez as he needed to go on the offensive and so he did. At one point he was punching so hard that he was just hitting the ropes and completely missing Mayweather. Alvarez went on to win the 11th 10-9(Moretti & Ross). The 12th was a defensive round knowing that Alvarez could only win with a knockout, Mayweather just laid back and dodged punches. Canelo would win the final round in which all judges scored 10-9, but it wouldn’t matter because Mayweather was too far ahead.

When it was all said and done, the stats were astonishing.

It came to a majority decision in favor of Mayweather. Craig Metcalfe scored it 117-11, Dave Moretti scored it 116-112 and by surprise C.J Ross had it 114-114 which shocked everyone. Mayweather had won the fight and the WBA/WBC Junior Welterweight Championship improving to 45-0 on his illustrious career.
