In the final game of the BCS Era; the top-ranked Florida State Seminoles were set to take on the second ranked Auburn Tigers this past Monday in the 2014 Vizio BCS National Championship game in Pasadena California.

The Seminoles were heavily favored and came in as a nine and a half point favorites over the Tigers. Led by Jimbo Fisher, Florida State came into the game at 13-0 with eight of those wins coming in ACC play. Auburn came in at 12-1 with seven wins coming in SEC play.

All things revolved around Florida State QB and Heisman winner Jameis Winston. Just a redshirt freshman, Jameis won many prestigious awards including the Heisman in just his first year. Some would doubt Jameis’ ability to play in a big game because of his struggles in the ACC Championship against Duke.

Auburn however seemed to be a team of destiny coming off a two win season in 2013, Auburn found themselves as SEC champs after beating Georgia and Alabama on miracle plays which landed them in the SEC title game in which they defeated Missouri. The win over Missouri game set up a date in Pasadena with Jameis Winston and the top-ranked Florida State Seminoles.

Many had doubted Winston and the top-ranked Seminoles because of recent SEC dominance throughout College Football. However everyone knew that head coach Jimbo Fisher would have the Seminoles ready for battle.

It would appear as if the Tigers were more prepared. After Florida State took a 3-0 lead early in the first quarter on a Roberto Aguayo 35 yard field goal; The Tigers came right back after going three and out on their first drive. After a good punt return by Auburn’s Chris Davis to the Florida State 25, quarterback Nick Marshall was able to find Tre Mason for a 12 yard touchdown pass; giving Auburn a 7-3 lead.

In the beginning of the second quarter Auburn forced a Florida State punt and immediately after, Tre Mason pulled of runs of 23 and 15 yards. After personal foul penalty against Florida State, Auburn found themselves at the 50. On the next play Nick Marshall found a wide-open Melvin Ray for a touchdown and just like that the Tigers were on top of the top-ranked Seminoles 14-3. Things then took a turn for the worst for Florida State.

Two drives later from their own 20, on 2nd and 6th Jameis Winston dropped back but put the ball on the ground and Auburn recovered. Nick Marshall would run one in later on that drive from four yards out. The top-ranked Seminoles found themselves in an 18 point hole down 21-3.

As of that moment, Auburn had all of the momentum. On the ensuing drive Auburn stopped the Seminoles on 3rd and 4 from their own 40 yard line forcing a punt. However, Jimbo Fisher pulled one out of his hat and called a fake punt which earned Florida State seven yards and a first down.

This would prove to be a turning point in the game as Jameis Winston would lead the Seminoles down the field. After completing two out of his three pass attempts along with rushing the ball twice to help the Seminoles move down to the Auburn three yard-line. Although Jameis only had two completions on that drive, it greatly boosted the Heisman winners confidence and Florida State would be able to cut the Auburn lead to 21-10, just before halftime.

Florida State would receive the second half kickoff but go three and out on the drive.

The only points scored in the third quarter would come courtesy of a Roberto Aguayo 41 yard field goal making things interesting and just a one possession game. After being down 18, the top-ranked Seminoles had fought back.

On Auburns first drive of the final quarter, Nick Marshall was intercepted by Florida State’s PJ Williams at FSU’s 40 yard line. Williams coughed the ball up and Florida State defensive back Lamarcus Joyner picked it up and kept the ball with Florida State after the interception.

Following the interception Winston found his favorite target Kelvin Benjamin for 21 yards. A play after that Winston found fullback Chad Abram out of the backfield for a 13 yard touchdown. Florida State cut the Auburn lead to one and just like that it was 21-20 Auburn.

Everyone knew that the next drive would prove to be one that would greatly help decide the outcome. If Auburn were to score a touchdown it would be an eight point game. The FSU defense walked out onto the field knowing they could not allow a touchdown. The top-ranked Seminole defense would come up clutch and stop Auburn at Florida State’s six yard line.

Cody Parkey added a 22 yard field goal to give Auburn a four point lead.

It was show time. With 4:42 left it looked as if the Seminoles next possession would be the final possession of the game. Then things changed in an instant.

On the ensuing kickoff Parkey sent it downfield to Levonte Whitfield and Whitfield came out of the end zone and never looked back. Block after block and the fastest Seminole found himself in open space with only the endzone in sight. And just like that the Seminoles had a 27-24 lead.

It seemed as if the tables had turned on the miracle boys. It seemed as if the Auburn Tigers found themselves on the other side of a late game miracle for once.

It wouldn’t be right if the Tigers hadn’t answered as they had done all season and that’s exactly what they did.

After two straight plays of no gain. Auburn found themselves in a third and ten; after scrambling, Nick Marshall found his favorite target Sammie Coates for 16 yards and a first down. Two plays later Auburn running back Tre Mason found a seam and scored from 37 yards out with 1:19 left giving Auburn a 31-27 lead.

It was now Jameis’ time; it was time for the Heisman winner to prove that the hype was real. He knew it was time and boy was he ready.

Two plays after the kickoff Winston found receiver Rashad Greene for 49 yards taking the ball down to the Auburn 21 with 56 seconds remaining in the college football season. After another first down, Florida State had one timeout and 12 yards to go.

On first down Winston was looking for Greene again but could not connect bringing up second and ten. The Seminoles gained seven more on another Winston pass to Devonta freeman bringing up third and three. Everything changed after a delay of game penalty brining up third and eight. On third down Winston was looking for Greene again in the end zone when pass interference was called on Auburn’s Chris Davis placing the ball at the Auburn two yard line.

Winston then went back to his favorite target one last time. On play-action Winston found six foot five Kelvin Benjamin for a two yard score giving the Seminoles a 34-31 lead and the 2013 BCS National Championship.

Said Winston before the final drive Monday “Guys, we didn’t come here for no reason. I said ‘Y’all, this is ours, man.”

Head Coach Jimbo Fisher expressed how pleased he was with the freshman quarterback saying “It was the best football game he’s played all year.” Fisher said, “And I’ll tell you why, because for three quarters he was up and down and he fought.” “If that’s not a great player, I don’t know who is.”

And so it was; Winston and Florida State, on top of the College Football world after dethroning the SEC after seven years of reign.
