Giants Off-Season So far

Nick LaRosa, Sports Writer

The New York Giants have gone on to what seems to be a spending spree this offseason. After making cuts and contracts ending, the Giants have made some of the biggest off-season moves to date. They have signed numerous additions to the team including the ex-niner and former Giant Mario Manningham, plus Trindon Holliday, one of the best kick-returners in the league. And the Giants didn’t stop at just improving their wide receiver core, they also went and signed Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Walter Thurmond, 2 great corner-backs who are not given the recognition they deserve. The whole reason for the Giants emptying their pockets was because of last season’s 7-9 record, while starting 0-6. Fans and the front office weren’t so happy, and even Tom Coughlin’s job was in jeopardy. But now that they have filled the holes they had last season, owners of the team, the GM’s, andespecially the fans know that the Giants have no excuse now to be a losing team, and they are expecting a lot more than a 7-9 record next season.

The giants last season had a lot trouble at the RB position last season, while not one running back had over 500 yards throughout the whole season. So they went out and signed Rashad Jennings. Jennings was the backup last year for the Raiders, and when Darren McFadden went down to injuries, Jennings picked up the slack. He started just 8 games and rushed 733 yards with 6 touchdowns, that’s more than half of all rushing touchdowns last season for the Giants (11)! This signing gives Jennings the chance to become the starter he deserves to be, plus is also giving the Giants a decent backfield. His contract is $14 million ($3 mil guaranteed) over the next 4 years.

The Giants didn’t just improve their backfield this off-season; they also signed 2 wide receivers. Let’s face it, Eli Manning didn’t have his best year last season, but part of that problem was that Manning only had one good WR in Victor Cruz. So the Giants signed one of the fastest wide receiver/ Kick returners in the league, Trindon Holliday. Holliday was drafted by the Texans in 2010 and floated around in their system a lot, and he even made the 53-man roster at some points, but eventually was cut in 2012 because of his height (5’5). As soon as he was cut the Denver Broncos picked him up, and his talents were recognized, as he became one of the best KR’s in the league. Currently, Holliday has 3 punt returns and 3 kick returns, which has shown teams that size doesn’t matter. His quickness and speed has shown he could be a great “down the field” kind of WR, which is what Eli Manning loves to do.

But the Giants didn’t stop after signing Holliday; they went on to sign Mario Manningham, who was drafted a giant in 2008, and had been a beloved WR on the roster. The fans remember him most when he made a spectacular catch during the super bowl against the Patriots. The catch he made motivated the giants down the field as they scored the game-winning TD to win Super Bowl 46. After that season he was asking for a max deal and the Giants didn’t think he was worth it, so Manningham signed with the 49er’s on a 2 year, $7.4 million dollar deal. Once Manningham signed with the niner’s his career went downhill. It started in 2012 with him tearing his ACL and PCL, which automatically declared him out for the season. And in August before the 2013 season started he was placed on the physically unable to perform list. He made a return at the beginning of November and got injured again at the end of December, which ended his season once again. And now he just signed with the Giants on a 1 year deal for only $800K, he still has a lot to prove especially after his injury. And hopefully he can play at the high level he played for the Giants in the 2011 postseason.

Besides the Giants improving their backfield and WR core, the also improved their defense extremely, by signing one of the best CB on the market. Dominque Rodgers-Cromartie or “DRC” had 3 picks last season for the Broncos, and 1 was returned for a 75-yard touchdown. DRC was the 2nd best CB option on the Broncos last year, only behind the legendary Champ Bailey. DRC’s contract with the Broncos was only a 1-year deal and he was an unrestricted free agent. The Broncos had offered DRC a contract this offseason, but when they signed Aqib Talib they resigned their offer. And that is when the Giants signed him, to a 5 year $39 million dollar deal ($15 million guaranteed). Hopefully he could pair well with Prince Amukamura and Corey Webster, and make the Giants CB’s reach their full potential.

And the last key signing for the Giants was another CB, who happened to be from the 2014 Super Bowl winning Seahawks. But despite having only 1 interception last year, Thurmond has unlimited potential to be a great cornerback. He was drafted in 2010 by the Seahawks and played in 14 games that season. Next season in 2011 he was projected to be a breakout star for the Seahawks, unfortunately he faced several injuries that sidelined him for most of the 2011 and 2012 seasons.

He came back and played in 12 games during the 2013-2014 season where he got his first interception, and then brought it back for a touchdown. The Giants see major potential in this young kid, and even though he still has a lot to learn he could be a decent number four cornerback for this team. So in the end it all comes down to if the Giants can win games and if they do, all the money spent will be worth it. But if the team still struggles, Tom Coughlin might be packing his bags, and he won’t be going to the next Giants road game. At a fans perspective, I am very excited and eager to see these new additions to the team go to work next season. And hopefully in the end, like all fans dream, the Giants can hoist that Lombardi Trophy above their heads once again.
