A Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious Sequel?

After more than 50 years since the original Mary Poppins movie came out, Disney has announced a sequel in the works. The studio plans to team up with its Into the Woods partners, including director Rob Marshall, to reboot this classic animation with a live-action musical counterpart.

According to insiders, the new film will take place in London, set 20 years after the original 1964 musical. The sequel will continue to focus on the adventures between the Banks family and a magical nanny known as Mary Poppins, the star of a series of children’s books by P.L. Travers. The film is said to borrow story elements from Travers’ eight Mary Poppins books.

The original film, starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke, told the story of a nanny with magical powers working for the Banks family in pre-World War I. The film was set in the year 1910, so the sequel will presumably take place in the 1930s. The film was a massive hit. It grossed $100 million at the box office and earned five Oscars.

The Mary Poppins sequel is set to be directed by Rob Marshall and produced by Jon DeLuca and Marc Platt, all of whom worked on the 2014 hit Broadway musical adaption Into the Woods, which grossed $199 million worldwide.

Mary Poppins isn’t the only animation being turned into a live-action hit, following the releases of Alice in Wonderland, Cinderella, and Maleficent. Although Disney is currently revamping old classics, it has also recently released new animated favorites such as Frozen, Big Hero 6, and Inside Out.
