Anniversary of Sandy

The 62 million dollar super storm is coming up on its one year anniversary on October 29th. Sandy, which wreaked havoc on many parts of the east coast, was responsible for 125 deaths in the United States including 60 in New York, 34 in New Jersey and 16 in Pennsylvania. At least seven people died in West Virginia, where the storm dropped heavy amounts of snow. It is consider the second most expensive storm in the U.S. history after 2005’s Hurricane Katrina.

In the aftermath of the natural disaster it left so many people still without homes or struggling to fix their homes, so two organizations have teamed up to make sure children affected by the storm have a happy holiday this year. The two organizations are Where-To-Turn and Secret Sandy Claus Project. Since so many people are still underwater with all their bills, they are not in the position of spending hundreds of dollars on Christmas presents. So this year the organizations’ goal is to collect 15,000 toys for children affected by the hurricane.

Still, a year later Sandy victims are still without power, jobs, and even homes. Sandy victims are becoming more and more aggravated with the insurers to get a fair payout for the damage on their homes, leaving them homeless and living in shelters. Monmouth Beach Sandy victims said they paid premiums for flood insurance but are only getting offered a fourth of the actual cost they need to rebuild their homes. The Highlands was devastated, with 90 percent of the downtown area homes and businesses flooded. Workers at Borough Hall that were flooded out are still working out of trailers.

A full year later it is unbelievable that so many people are doing without and haven’t gotten nearly anywhere on their path to recovery after super storm Sandy hit the east coast going 115 miles per hour.
