Bright Futures for LP Editors

Jamie Galyas, Managing Editor

Over these past few years, the Lancer’s Point has grown into a successful school publication. There have been new columns added, more readers, and great articles. But this would not have been possible without the hard-working and dedicated staff that helped build up the Lancer’s Point. Our most active senior writers and editors are graduating very soon. They left their mark with the Lancer’s Point and here you can read where they are continuing their journey.

Stephanie Brogna

The Lancer’s Point, editor-in-chief, Stephanie Brogna, will be attending Chestnut Hill College in the fall. She is passionate about journalism and happy to be majoring in Communications with a focus in Journalism and minoring in Photography. Brogna, also our photographer for the paper recounts, “I loved being able to take pictures for the paper. It was really cool to be able to see so many functions through the lens of a camera and be able to share those experiences with students and readers who could not make it to the activity.” Her debut article was New York Fashion Week 2013 and it was followed by some of her best articles which include, Should Cell Phones be allowed in School?, Backstage Pass: High School Musical, An Open Letter to High School Juniors, An Open Letter to my Fellow Graduates. Brogna hopes to be doing what she loves in the future, being happy, she says, “If journalism took a huge part in that happiness it would just be the icing on the cake.” She is ready to move onto college and already plans on writing for their newspaper, The Griffin.

Julia Aleo

One of the most hard-working and positive people on the staff, Julia Aleo, a writer and editor will be moving onto Elizabethtown College where she will major in Occupational Therapy. Aleo, the creator of LP Humans of SJV section says, “My favorite memory from Lancer’s Point are my interviews with all the amazing individuals for Humans of SJV.” Aleo’s debut article was, Tie- Dye for Hope. Over her years writing for the newspaper some of her most notable articles include, Taylor Swift’s Shaking It Off with a New Album, Taylor Swift’s Exclusive Listening Session, Senioritis- A Legitimate Problem, Upgrade: Pep to Political Rally, and Farewell, Lancer’s Point. Aleo comments that she wants happiness for her future and as for her writing she says, “I will never stop writing. That doesn’t mean I’ll ever be published again (haha) but I will still be writing for myself!”

Trinity Day

Trinity Day, our very own, What’s Trending Editor, will continue her education at Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove, PA. Although, Day could not pinpoint a specific favorite memory from her time writing for the Lancer’s Point she does say, “I enjoyed all the laughs and conversations that we all shared as a class and the staff.” Day’s first article was, SJV Fashion Club, following that, some of her best articles include, Radio City Christmas Spectacular Review, SJV Joins the March for Life, Super Spirit Week 2014, So You Want to Go to Prom? Day plans on graduating, getting a job she loves, and just going with the flow of life with no set plan. She says, she will continue to write and is strongly considering joining Susquehanna’s Odyssey, “so I may join their staff to keep my writing skills sharp and to continue to grow as a writer.

Jessica Ventura

One of the nicest and funniest writers on the staff, Jessica Ventura, will be going to Villanova University and majoring in Communications. “ In all seriousness, probably when Mrs. Schmidt put one of my first articles on the ”scrolly.” She saw the potential that I didn’t see in myself. She made me more confident in who I wanted to be and what I wanted to do in my life…And for that I’m forever grateful. In non-seriousness, probably playing Club Penguin or when David Bayha walked in during Steph’s goodbye speech,” she says about her favorite memory from the Lancer’s Point. Ventura’s first article was SJV Choir and Band Spread Cheer at the Annual Christmas Concert. Other notable articles include, SJV Danced Away the Back-to-School Blues, Emma Watson Redefines Feminism, Ferguson Verdict Initiates Uprisings, We Can All Dream: My Journey to Ellen. She dreams to work for Disney, NBC, or Buzzfeed when she is out of college. Ventura says, “I’ve always loved journalism because I can find the extraordinary in the ordinary and project it to the world. To find the miracle in the mundane. That is what I want for my future, and what I want for my journalism career.” When I asked her if she would continue writing after graduation, she responded, “YES OF COURSE I WILL CONTINUE TO WRITE ARE YOU CRAZY?! Joining the newspaper was one of the most intimidating and rewarding experiences of my life. It gave me something to be a part of and something to be excited about. It was my ”thing” in high school. How could I throw that away?”

Emily Mugno

One of our greatest sports writers, Emily Mugno, will be attending Penn State University starting this summer and is majoring in Telecommunications. “My favorite memory from my time writing for the Lancer’s Point was being able to write about sports because I was able to practice what I loved doing in a fun environment,” says Mugno when recounting her time writing for LP.  Mungo’s first article was, Right Decision Comes Along with Wrong Punishment, and it was followed by some of her best articles which are, The Pope’s Visit to America, Erin Andrews, SJV Girls Volleyball Team. She has big ideas for her future, “As of now, I would like to be a sports broadcaster for ESPN or any other big sporting network. Mugno will continue reporting when she gets to college, “whether it’s writing for the newspaper, doing radio, or broadcasting for sports games.”

Caroline McFarland

One of the brightest stars on the Lancer’s Point staff is Caroline McFarland. She will continue her education at Drexel University and major in Communications with a concentration in Journalism. “My favorite memory from my time writing for the newspaper is when I published my first article. I wrote about Robin Williams’ death. It was an emotional topic for me, but I remember being so content with the final article,” says McFarland after joining the LP. Some of her most notable articles include, Viral Photo Saves a Man’s Life, Finding a Forever Home, Alan Rickman Dies at 69, More Caucuses, Primaries, and Super Tuesday, theSkimm. McFarland plans on furthering her journalism career in school and says, “I will definitely continue to write after this, and plan on writing for the Drexel newspaper, The Triangle.”

Briana Bowers

After her time here, she will be moving onto Drexel University she explains, “I’m an undeclared media major (general media, but still acts as undecided).” Her debut article was, Mysterious Halo and her most notable published articles include, The Common Cold Gets an Upgrade, Olympian Athlete Sentenced to Prison, Food Truck and Rock Carnival, Stress: Senior Year vs. Freshman Year, A Christmas (Card) Miracle. She hopes to graduate from college, possibly attend graduate school, and start working in a job that can support her, she also wants a dog. Bowers says on continuing writing, “Yes! I actually want to be some form of a writer, but I’m not exactly sure what yet.”

Jamie Galyas

As for me, I am still considering which college I will be attending, as I am deciding between Emerson College, Drexel University, Saint Joseph’s University, and Sarah Lawrence College. I know that no matter where I end up I will be majoring in Communications and continuing to report, hopefully in and after college. It was an honor being Managing Editor for the Lancer’s Point along with a great staff of writers and an amazing teacher, Mrs. Schmidt. I would like to thank everyone whom I have had the chance to learn besides and write with over these past few years. My time on the Lancer’s Point is one of the things I will miss the most about SJV. As we begin the new chapter of our stories, I am confident that we will all continue on to do great things.

Thank you Lancer’s Point for the great memories, friendships, and helping me find what I am truly passionate about.

It is so hard to stop writing this because I never want it to end. Thank you again and good luck.

Sincerely,

Jamie Galyas, Managing Editor
