Back to the Ballroom with DWTS
September 26, 2016
A new season of Dancing with the Stars premiered this past Monday and it did not disappoint. Ever since 2005, DWTS has cha-cha’d its way into our hearts and keeps us glued to our TV each season. There have been a wide range of stars that have appeared on the show over the years, ranging from TV personalities such as Rob Kardashian, all the way to Ingo Rademacher (who in all honesty, we are still trying to find out who he is). This season, which is the 23rd season of the ABC dancing competition, features 13 celebrities that are ready to hit the ballroom.
- Jake T. Austin
You probably know him as Selena Gomez’s goofy younger brother from Disney Channel’s Wizards of Waverly Place. Recently, he just left the hit ABC Family series, The Fosters, where he played one of the main characters, Jesus. This season on DWTS, he is partnered with a new pro, Jenna Johnson. Their first dance together, which was a Jive, received a 22 out of 40 from the four judges. Though the judges claimed that it appeared Austin was constantly trying to catch up to his partner, he has another week in the ballroom to redeem himself!
- Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds
This R&B singer was probably the last person you would see dancing in the ballroom, but according to Babyface, he is excited to do something that is outside his comfort zone. Babyface and his partner, Allison Holker, danced the Foxtrot as their first dance on the show. Though the judges noticed that their dance did get a little hectic at times, it was clear to the audience that this duo had a lot of potential. The four judges gave them a total score of 26 out of 40. But let’s be real, he deserved at least 10 more points just for dedicating the dance to his mom.
- Marilu Henner
This is definitely an experience that Henner will not forget anytime soon (Get it? Because she has an autobiographical memory! At least I laughed). This season, she is partnered with Derek Hough, so basically, she has already won this competition. Hough is known for being one of the best pro-dancers on the show and for winning numerous times, so any celebrity that is partnered with him is very lucky. Though, it did not seem like she was that lucky that night when she received a score of 27/40 for her Jive. Regardless of her score for the first week, with Hough as her partner, Marilu Henner is bound to become a professional dancer by the end of the season.
- Laurie Hernandez
Can someone just hand this child the Mirror ball Trophy already?! Seriously, this girl has come straight from her women’s gymnastics Gold Medal win at the Rio Olympics this past summer right to the ballroom, and she’s only 16! I’m 16 and I can barely even get out of bed in the morning, so mad props to her. She also hails from Old Bridge, New Jersey, which is just a few minutes away from Saint John Vianney High School. On DWTS, Hernandez is partnered with Val Chmerkovskiy, who has been on the show since its 13 season. Before she even had her first dance, Hernandez was an early front-runner due to her gymnastic capabilities which would come in hand during the competition. Laurie and her partner were tied in first place with a score of 31 out of 40 for the night with their Cha-Cha. If you ask us, the Olympics aren’t going to be her only win this year.
- James Hinchcliffe
Every season on Dancing with the Stars, ABC likes to throw in a random person and label them a “star” just to make things fair for everyone. James Hinchcliffe is that person. Who is he, you make ask? Hinchcliffe is actually an IndyCar driver and has done well at many of the events that he has participated in over the years. Hinchliffe is partnered with pro Sharna Burgess and the pair tied with Laurie & Val for first place with a score of 31 out of 40 for their Foxtrot. Maybe by the end of this season people will actually know who he is!
- Vanilla Ice
Before I say anything, can we just appreciate that Vanilla Ice is on this show? I think that I will be sending a letter to the President of ABC to thank him for this sometime soon. On another note…Vanilla Ice, who goes by Robert on the show, is partnered with pro Witney Carson. Their first dance, a Cha-Cha, was performed to Vanilla Ice’s hit song from 1990 “Ice Ice Baby.” I wasn’t even alive in the 90’s and this performance still hit me pretty hard. The pair received a total score of 25 out of 40 from the judges. Okay, maybe his score was a little bit underwhelming, but that doesn’t stop the fact that his dance was a highlight of the whole night.
- Terra Jole
So if DWTS is casting random people and calling them “celebrities,” when am I going to be on this show?! Terra (pronounced Tara) is actually a little person and is one of the stars of Little People: LA. As seen from her interviews, Terra was a little nervous at first about joining a show such as this due to her disability, but she is confident that she can do anything as long as she tries her best. You go, Terra. Her partner for the season is Sasha Farber and their first dance of the competition was a Jive. They received a score of 25 out of 40 from the judges. Even though this is not a great score, there is always room for improvement and America cannot wait to Terra hit the floor again next week.
- Calvin Johnson Jr.
Who would’ve thought that we would ever get the chance to see this former NFL wide-receiver hit the ballroom floor? Johnson is partnered with pro Lindsay Arnold this season and it is clear that this couple is going to be one to watch. The pair danced the Cha-Cha and the judges gave them a score of 26 out of 40. Regardless of the score that they received, their infectious chemistry was enough to entertain the audience. Will this former NFL player be as good in the ballroom as he is on the field? I guess we will have to wait until his next dance to find out!
- Jana Kramer
There is simply nothing that could make us happier than seeing a former member of One Tree Hill on DWTS! This actress turned country singer is ready to hit the ballroom despite her troubles this past year. Kramer stated that even though her life has been hectic (she is currently going through a separation from her husband), she hopes she will find peace from this experience. The country singer is partnered with a Gleb Savchenko, who is returning to DWTS after a six-year hiatus from the show. Kramer’s first dance was a Viennese Waltz. To make it even better, they danced to “Dangerous Woman” by Ariana Grande, and it simply does not get better than that. Two of the judges, Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli, loved the theme of the dance in all of its darkness. On the other hand, judges Len Goodman and Julianne Hough, stated that they would have preferred a more traditional dance. All in all, the pair received a score of 27 out of 40. Hopefully, Kramer will be able to win over all four of her judges with her next dance!
- Ryan Lochte
Oh, Ryan. Where do we begin? Like Laurie Hernandez, Lochte, a swimmer, has also just completed his time at the Olympics. Although, his experience was a little more controversial than others (Ryan was a part of a lying scandal near the end of the Olympics and now many people are angered at this event and feel that he is a disgrace), he hopes to be able to redeem himself during his time on DWTS. Lochte’s first dance ended up being very unforgettable, but not for the right reasons. After he finished his Foxtrot with returning pro, Cheryl Burke, protesters rushed the stage and attempted to attack the swimmer. Fortunately, the DWTS security team saved the day and got ahold of the protestors. After the scare, Ryan and Cheryl received a score of 24 out of 40 from the judges. Hopefully their dance will improve next week and will be free of protesters storming onto the stage on live television.
- Maureen McCormick
Marcia Brady is all grown up now and is ready to enter the ballroom (as opposed to the Brady Family home). Even though the former Brady Bunch star revealed that she is filled with insecurities at the moment, we all know that she will be able to overcome them in no time. This season, Maureen is partnered with Artem Chigvintsev, who also appeared on the British version of DWTS, Strictly Come Dancing. The pair received a judges score of 22 out of 40 from the judges for their Viennese Waltz, but who even cares about her score when we got the chance to see her reunite with her former TV mom, Florence Henderson? Hopefully next week we will not only see her receive a higher score, but that we will also receive a Brady Bunch reunion!
- Rick Perry
Is this the show where people go when they don’t become the President of the United States? Perry, the former governor of Texas, is joining the star-studded cast this season and has expressed that he hopes to spread veterans awareness during his time on the show. He also really wants to impress his daughters. Perry is partnered with Emma Slater, who is entering her sixth season as a professional dancer on the show. Unfortunately for the pair, who danced the Cha-Cha, they received the lowest score of the night, a 20 out of 40. Okay, maybe things aren’t looking too great for Rick and Emma, but who knows, maybe next week they’ll have the highest score!
- Amber Rose
Aaannddd we saved the most dramatic for last. Let’s just take a moment to acknowledge that Kanye West and Wiz Khalifa’s ex is on Dancing with the Stars. When did our society hit rock bottom? Anyway, that doesn’t mean we enjoyed her dance any less! Amber is partnered with returning pro, Maksim Chmerkovskiy. Maks hasn’t been a pro on the show since he won season 18, which was was over two years ago! After dancing the the Foxtrot, the pair received a score of 24 out of 40 from the judges. Hopefully the next time we see Amber dancing, one of her famous exes will be cheering her on in the audience!
