According to ESPN, the House Committee On Oversight and Government Reform will assemble for a hearing next week regarding the testing of HGH (Human Growth Hormones), also known as steroids, in professional football. The NFL Players Association mentioned the insufficiency of HGH testing and sought to get opinions during a hearing with Congress.
The hearing will be led by Rep. Darrell Issa of California and Rep. Elijah Cummings of Maryland. Both congressmen had previously worked on the HGH issue in 2011. Among the witnesses to be called is Hall of Famer Dick Butkus who is the head of the organization called Play Clean. Play Clean seeks to inform high school students about the dangers of HGH and performance-enhancing drugs. Travis Tygart, Executive Director of the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, and Francis Collins, Director of the National Institutes of Health, will be called in as witnesses as well.
The outcome of this hearing could lead to HGH testing in the NFL, which could ultimately result in a clean, drug free future for the NFL.
