Disney’s Polynesian Princess
October 9, 2015
For 14-year-old Auli’i Cravalho, fate (and a lot of luck) gave her a fairytale shot at being a princess – a Disney Princess, that is. A chance encounter with a casting agent during a charity singing competition in Oahu, changed the young girl’s life entirely.
Disney has just announced that Cravalho will be the voice of Moana, the first Polynesian princess starring in the upcoming animated film titled after the character. In a new video introducing the Hawaiian native, casting director Rachel Sutton says that Cravalho was the very last girl she saw during auditions, and knew from that moment that she would be the one.
Cravalho grew up in Mililani, Hawaii, similar to her character Moana. She says that’s not the only thing the two have in common.
“Moana is such an amazing character. She’s brave, she is so empowered, she knows what she wants and she’s not afraid to get it, and I think that’s something that I can relate to as well. I just love watching how she goes along in this wonderful movie and grows as a person and helps her culture along the way.” Cravalho told People Magazine.
Moana is set 2,000 years ago and tells the story of the young hero’s journey to fulfill her ancestors’ quest, though there is no hint as to what this quest may be yet. The new Disney film will come to theaters on Nov. 23, 2016.
Though there is still a year to go before the movie hits theaters, Disney has just released the first full look at the princess. A tattooed demi-god names Maui, played by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson was released along with Moana.
