The Good Place is a show created by Michael Schur that is about the afterlife. Everything in the Good Place is always perfect, nothing should go wrong, right? In this show, there are four main characters who are members of the Good Place neighborhood, including Eleanor, Chidi, Tahani and Jason. There is also the architect of this neighborhood, Michael, who poses as the mayor of a town. Also, there is what someone can call a walking Google, whose name is Janet. If anyone says Janet’s name, she appears out of thin air and answers any questions someone asks. As time goes on in this neighborhood, Eleanor finds out she was there by mistake and that she should not be in the Good Place due to her bad actions in her previous life. Her friend Chidi, who was an ethics professor, decides to teach Eleanor how to be a better person so she can fit in with the rest of the good people.
To analyze, The Good Place is a comedy and fiction television series. The show is filled with lots of jokes and some emotional moments, too. In addition, this show incorporates big plot twists to keep viewers guessing what happens next. This series explores moral philosophy and what is described as good or bad, which can make an audience think about what the right thing to do is in any situation. It takes on questions such as, what makes someone a good or bad person and can someone be a better person after being bad all their life. Character development in the show helps the audience understand what these characters have gone through in their life versus how they live it in the Good Place now. Throughout the show, the characters venture through many different places in the afterlife realm, which teaches them multiple things about where they are and what they are doing there. As quoted by a junior SJV student, who watched the series, “The show is very good and has a great plot twist.” In all, the show, The Good Place, can present new perspectives on the fantasy version of the afterlife and teach others what it means to be a moral person.
