Christmas in the City

Briana Bowers, Writer

As the Christmas season rolls in, along comes everyone’s favorite traditions. There’s a part of us all that looks forward to the snow, the lights, and of course, the Christmas tree. And where else can we receive that sense of holiday cheer other than New York City?
For years, Christmas in the city has been a romanticized thought focused on New York. Many classic holiday songs speak of New York as an ideal winter wonderland. Year after year Radio City has served as a holiday icon where children and adults alike go to see the Christmas Spectacular. Since 1933, people across the nation have watched the city light their colossal Christmas tree, as well as ending the Christmas season and ringing in the new year with the Times Square ball dropping.
The Radio City Christmas Spectacular is nothing short of its name. The audience takes a magical ride with Santa and the Rockettes in a show fit for all ages. With dancing, singing, incredible special effects, and even a 3-D ride on Santa’s sleigh, everyone is sure to find something that’ll fill them with Christmas cheer. The show combines classic Christmas tales, an adventure to Santa’s workshop, and even a beautiful depiction of the nativity story as a reminder of what Christmas is truly about. It is a wonderful experience for the whole family to share, combining the excitement of something new with the comfort of something traditional.
The Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree is a symbol of the holidays known worldwide. The 85-foot tree was lit on Dec. 3 on national television with live performances from some of today’s biggest stars. Thousands of people crowded the streets to see the tree light up, as millions watched at home. Until Jan. 7, 2015, the tree will remain lit and welcomes everyone to come and witness the marvel firsthand.
As one walks through the city, it is impossible to ignore the spirit. It doesn’t matter if you’re one or 92, the holiday cheer in New York City is enough to warm your heart despite the bitter cold.
