SJV’s Latino Club

SJVs Latino Club

The Latino Club at Saint John Vianney High School is a group of students who celebrate the Hispanic and Latino heritage. The club has multiple bake sales during the school year where they sell all sorts of Spanish foods, such as empanadas, churros, and nachos. Unlike most clubs at SJV, the club gives out more than just ordinary cupcakes and cookies, and the student body seems to really enjoy the unusual bake sale items that they sell.

Sept. 15 was the start of Hispanic Heritage Month. The Latino club has been celebrating throughout the month by playing music from Spanish countries over the loudspeaker. The members have also been announcing facts about people in those countries and the culture.

Not all members of this club are Hispanic/Latino. In order to be a part of the club, you have to be interested in Spanish culture and excited to make the club better. Olivia Wojtowicz, a non-Hispanic member of the Latino Club, describes her favorite part of the club as “ being able to learn more about cultures that I have no idea about. Since I do not have Latino heritage, it is interesting to me and it’s a fun environment to learn.” Wojtowicz’s reasoning for joining the club was because she wanted to learn about Latino culture, meet new people, and wanted to take part in the Ronald McDonald Housetrip.

Last year, the Latino Club collected items such as paper towels, diapers, eating utensils, and wipes to donate to The Ronald McDonald House of Long Branch. The club gives back to the house almost every year. It’s great exposure for the club and it is amazing how much our school is able to impact the Ronald McDonald House in such a positive way.

The Latino Club is a great club if you are interested in learning about all things Latin . Being in the club will introduce you to many new people and every member comes out of the club loving their experience and having newfound knowledge of the Latin Culture
