Hollywood’s Golden Night

It’s often described as Hollywood’s craziest event, and on Sunday night, the 72nd annual Golden Globes lived up to its name as movie and television royals merged with critic’s favorites and newcomers alike.

For the third and seemingly last time, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler took the Golden Globes stage and supplied jokes that stretched from vulgar to sarcastic. The co-hosts advised that no topic was forbidden, and they verified it with a stab at Bill Cosby right at the start. “In ‘Into the Woods,’ Cinderella runs from her Prince, Rapunzel is flung from a tower for her prince, and Sleeping Beauty just assumed she was hanging out with Bill Cosby,” Fey said, eliciting many stunned faces of the crowd. That led to Fey and Poehler’s battling Cosby imitations in his famous “Jell-O pudding” voice: “I put the pills in the people.’’

The next aim was George Clooney. Fey took many digs at the A-lister and indirectly referenced his new wife, Amal. He got an earful from the hosts about receiving a lifetime accomplishment honor, when his wife is the real big achiever in the family. Clooney took the teasing in stride, and focused a portion of his acceptance speech to his charming bride.

The final target of the beginning monologue was none other than North Korea. ‘’Tonight we praise all the fantastic television shows we know and love, as well as all the films that North Korea tolerated. The major story in Hollywood this year was when North Korea threatened to attack if Sony Pictures released ‘The Interview,’ pushing us to pretend we wanted to see it. North Korea referred to ‘The Interview’ as unbearable and a vicious act of terror. Even more astonishing, not the worst criticism the movie got.’’ Margaret Cho reprised her role as Dictator Kim Jong Uhn in the North Korea bit.

It was shaping up to be a close race between ‘’Boyhood,’’ ‘’Birdman,’’ and ‘’Selma,’’ which were all expected to receive many Golden Globe wins and Oscar nominations this week. But ‘’Boyhood’s’’ innovative method of shooting the movie with the same people for over 12 years paid off big time. The film received Best Drama, Best Director for Richard Linklater and Best Supporting Actress for Patricia Arquette. ‘’Birdman,’’ which led with seven nominations achieved one win in the better categories as Michael Keaton kicked off his comeback with the Best Actor award. However, ‘’Selma,’’ which was under fire for what some say are historical errors in the movie, got practically shut out, except for the Best Song prize for the film’s track ‘’Glory’’ by John Legend and Common.

Most of the anticipated big names won in the acting categories. Patricia Arquette of ‘’Boyhood’’ won Supporting Actress, Eddie Redmayne of ‘’The Theory of Everything’’ won Lead Actor in a Drama, Michael Keaton of ‘’Birdman’’ won Lead Actor in a Comedy, Julianne Moore of ‘’Still Alice’’ secured Lead Actress in a Drama, and J.K Simmons of ‘’Whiplash’’ won Supporting Actor in a Drama. In fact, you can certainly see that this group will soon be walking away with Oscars, though Redmayne and Keaton will have to fight it out in the Lead Actor category.

Wes Anderson, the king of quirk and eccentricity, was the butt of most jokes made by Fey and Poehler, saying that he traveled to the awards show on a bike made of tuba parts. So when he went up on the stage to receive his award for Best Picture, Comedy, or Musical, the hope for a joke or two was in the air. The anticipation was met with a rather silly speech that involved narrating the names of many foreign strangers, insisting on recognizing the members of the Hollywood Foreign Press by name.

The most startling win was ‘’The Grand Budapest Hotel.’’ Anderson’s movie was a dark horse candidate. It was hard to imagine the film defeating ‘’Birdman’’ and ‘’Into the Woods’’ for Best Comedy or Musical, and yet it did. The mysterious comedy was Anderson’s most popular movie at the box office, not to mention his most morbid: the story of a hotel concierge falsely accused of having killed a guest. The film was up for four honors, including Best Actor for Ralph Fiennes, Best Director, and Best Screenplay. It simply won the Best Picture, which means that the Hollywood Foreign Press believed the movie was better than the sum of its parts.

First-year TV shows ruled at this year’s Golden Globes. The consistent contenders were nominated, including House of Cards, Homeland, Game of Thrones, and Orange is the New Black. However, the real superstar of the night was Amazon’s revolutionary series ‘’Transparent.’’ It became the first online streaming show to win the Best Series, something Netflix’s House of Cards has never achieved. Its leading male Jeffrey Tambor, who plays a 70-year-old transgender woman, also won for the Best Actor in a Comedy.

In the meantime, the Hollywood Foreign Press recognized the CW’s ‘’Jane the Virgin’’ and gave the Best Actress in a Comedy award to Gina Rodriguez, who stars as a woman inadvertently and artificially impregnated with her boss’s baby. Also, Showtime’s ‘’The Affair’’ came home with two big wins. ‘’The Affair,’’ a steamy soap opera about an affair told from various points of view, landed the Best Drama award, alongside Best Actress for Ruth Wilson.

The most shocking facet of the show was the victory of ‘’Fargo’’ over ‘’True Detective.’’ ‘’Fargo’’ scooped up the big awards, winning over the HBO crime series for Best Miniseries. Also, Billy Bob Thornton beat Matthew McConaughey for Best Actor in a Miniseries.

There were a few TV disappointments besides ‘’Fargo’’ and ‘’True Detective.’’ No one predicted Joanne Froggatt of ‘’Downton Abbey’’ to leave with the Best Supporting Actress award. Most people assumed the honor was expected to go to Uzo Aduba of ‘’Orange is the New Black.’’ Also, Matt Bomer of HBO’s ‘’The Normal Heart’’ wasn’t the favorite, which was surprising.

All of the celebrities had an unusual glow that night, but not for the reason you’d think. The Beverly Hilton seemingly discarded the air conditioning, making the already overheated room sweltering hot and causing everyone to sweat abundantly. It did not look great on screen.

With the broadcast of the 2015 Oscar nominations resulting from this year’s Golden Globes, awards season is formally upon us.
