The Yankees are coming off a runner-up World Series campaign that left many fans wondering what they were changing. The Yankees went out and made major moves to answer their questions. The first significant move of the offseason was the trade for Devin Williams. The Brewers were given pitcher Nestor Cortes and infielder Caleb Durbin. Seeing the beloved pitcher Nestor Cortes leave the Yankees was a strict watch. Still, the arguably best closer in baseball coming to the Bronx was a great addition. 4 days later, the Yankees signed Max Fried for 8 years and, the same day, traded for outfielder Cody Bellinger. He was traded for cash and a pitcher, which was seen as a good move for the Yankees. 13 days later, the Yankees solved their problem at 1st base with Paul Goldschmidt. They also brought back key reliever Jonathan Loaisiga.
There were two key storylines for the Yankees after the offseason this year. The hole needed to be filled at the 3rd base, and there was an issue with Marcus Stroman. The void at 3rd base was to be filled by somebody in the organization, said manager Aaron Boone. The 3rd base race is between 3 people: Dj LeMahieu, Oswald Cabrera, and Oswald Peraza. The injury to Dj LeMahieu has ruled him out of the race. Cabrera and Peraza are now the two clear runners for the race, and neither has solidified their case. Peraza has shown to be a better defender but is batting 217, while Cabrera is not much better at 247, leaving a lot to be desired for the two infielders. The Marcus Stroman problem is that the Yankees don’t want him there. They wanted him as a bullpen guy, and he was adamant about being a starting pitcher, leading to a very public issue between the two parties. One of the smaller stories is Jasson Dominguez. Being a natural center fielder most of his career, the Yankees have him moving over to the left, where he looks completely lost. The Yankees want him as an everyday left fielder, meaning that the way he plays the position needs to change. Opening day is in less than a month, and he looks no better than when he started in spring.
