More than Special Club

St. John Vianney is known for having a wide variety of clubs. The school currently has 38 different clubs to join with some of the most popular including Pax Christi, Holiday Cheer Club, Key Club, Photography Club, and Animal Awareness club.

A recent addition to the long list of clubs is the More than Special Club. This club was started by a group of junior friends including Michaela McGuiness, Michelle Trott, Courtney Thompson, Caroline Nittoli, and Jessica Moukios. “We began thinking about it around the beginning of sophomore year. We proposed this club to our moderator, Ms. Capotorto, and got permission to do the club by the end of last year,” says McGuiness.  “This club is about raising money and awareness for people with special needs,” said McGuiness. This club was not only created to promote awareness but because this cause is one that is extremely close to the heart of one of the founders.  Jessica Moukios shared, “I started this club because I was inspired by my cousin that has Down Syndrome. I thought that it would be a good idea for a club to have such a beautiful goal and message.” The first club meeting was on Thursday, September 27th. It was clear it was a huge hit as tons of students filed into Room 102 to learn more about this inspirational new club.

Before the club was officially announced, word spread around SJV and students were intrigued. “We also were able to recruit many freshmen at the Club Fair,” said McGuiness. To raise money the club plans on having future bake sales, selling hot chocolate and bracelets to supports the cause. Throughout the school year, the founders plan to continue to raise awareness and hopefully raise money for this remarkable cause.
